Event Venue - The Betty Little House Home of the Charlotte Council of Garden Clubs, Inc.

The Betty Little House is a beautiful one hundred plus year old Craftsman home that the Charlotte Council of Garden Clubs makes available for event rentals. It had an interesting history before it became the home of the Council.

The Betty Little House was built circa 1920 by John Ward. The lumber used in the construction was once a part of the barracks of Camp Greene (a training camp for thousands of soldiers during WWI) and acquired when the Camp was removed.

In 1923 the John Lester Stancill family became the owners. In the 1920s Seventh Street was a quiet residential neighborhood with lawns and lovely gardens. A streetcar traveled just two blocks away. Mrs. Stancill’s daughter and son told of their mother’s love of flowers and the beautiful window boxes of petunias that hung from the second story windows, as well as downstairs and on the porch. Garden Clubs had not yet come to Charlotte, but neighbors traded plants and ideas much as club members do today.

Ethel Stancill Enders (daughter of John Lester Stancill) and her husband lived in the house until it was sold to the Moffetts for a tearoom and antique shop called the Queen Charlotte Tavern. The tearoom occupied the lower floor, and the antiques were shown upstairs.

In October of 1977 the Charlotte Council of Garden Clubs, Inc. embarked on a search for a home for its garden center and library. In June of 1978, following a special meeting of the member clubs, the property was selected. Council members canvassed businesses, family, and friends to make the purchase of the property a reality. A preview party at the house launched the drive, and with the funds collected the house was acquired.

In 1995 it was named “The Betty Little House” after the first president of the Council and the moving force in its purchase. Her portrait hangs in the library.
